Surf City Garage TV Commercial

Behind the Scenes: Surf City Garage “Speed Demon” (2015)

In 2015, Digital Studios West produced Speed Demon, a national television commercial for Surf City Garage that blended classic car-culture humor with a slick, cinematic finish. Designed to feel playful without losing authenticity, the spot went on to run nationally for several years — and remains a favorite example of how a simple idea, executed well, can have real staying power.

”had a great time working with Surf City Garage to get the look just right. We shot at the Orange County Fairgrounds with a fantastic crew and cast — one of those productions where everyone showed up ready to work.”    –Paul Sadler

The concept was straightforward and tongue-in-cheek. A group of guys strolls through a car show when something off in the distance stops them cold. At first glance, it appears to be a stunning blonde standing next to a bright orange muscle car, casually bent over while fixing the clasp on her shoe. The group is mesmerized.

One of the men approaches and asks politely, “Do you mind if we get a shot?”

She smiles and says sure.

That’s when the reveal lands. Our hero steps smoothly into frame, gently motioning her aside and presenting the real subject of attention — the brilliantly polished orange muscle car — arm extended like Vanna White unveiling a prize. The camera cuts back to the group snapping photos, one of them subtly gesturing for the woman to step out of frame.

The joke lands cleanly, and the message is clear.

The spot closes with car-culture icon Chris Jacobs, best known as the host of Overhaulin’, delivering the final line:

“You want that shine on your ride? Then get Surf City Garage Speed Demon. Your ride is worth it.”

Behind the scenes, the production was anything but simple. From coordinating picture cars arriving on haulers, to managing a tight shoot schedule, to keeping the energy up on set, the project was a full-scale commercial production. Crew members worked across departments — camera, grip, lighting, art, and logistics — all while maintaining the polished, fun tone the concept demanded.

For Digital Studios West, Speed Demon was a reminder of what makes production work rewarding: strong collaboration, a clear creative idea, and a crew that takes pride in the details. The result was a spot that didn’t just sell a product — it entertained, resonated with car enthusiasts, and stood the test of time.

Even years later, the project remains a touchstone for the kind of storytelling we enjoy most: grounded, humorous, and executed with care from first setup to final frame.

Big Ideas,  Real Budgets

While Digital Studios West continues to produce national commercial work, Speed Demon remains a standout example of what’s possible when a clear idea meets the right execution. Produced on a modest budget, the spot carried the polish of a much larger production — shot on 35mm film and finished by R!OT in Los Angeles.

It’s a reminder that scale isn’t just about dollars. With the right team, preparation, and creative focus, ambitious projects — including films — can be made thoughtfully and effectively, even within real-world constraints.
